Chateau de Meursault

I spent the last weekend in Burgundy, we visited the wine cellars of Chateau de Meursault, amongst other things. I knew it was a famous wine brand, but the castle itself is not that exceptional. But what you definitely don’t expect is the vastness of the underground cellar system. One of the chais can fit over 800 oak barrels. There are several of those. Some parts of the cellar date back from the middle ages. There are about 700.000 bottles stockpiled too (at an average $50 a bottle, I let you do the math). And there were probably more cellars that are not opened to the public. Amazing.

george - An excellent photo essay. I really like the gothic blackness and pool of light in number 5.

I just wonder how long it would take one man to drink it all – if they didn’t succumb to kidney failure first. Ah well I’m off to think about it – over a glass of wine!
